City of Two Rivers

The first settlement in what is now known as Portland was owned by Elisha Newman in 1833, and the first post office was opened in 1837. Train service began in 1869. Portland was home to several Native American tribes, and was once the dwelling-place of Chief John Okemos of the Ojibwe (Chippewa).

Portland in 1870 was approximately 1,060, and is now home to about 3,936 people and growing.  Portland is home to two K-12 school systems, Portland Public Schools and Portland St. Patrick’s.  Located at the confluence of the Grand and Looking Glass Rivers, Portland provides boundless water recreation opportunities including fishing, canoeing, and kayaking.  Portland’s 10 miles of paved Rivertrail through and around the town connecting an extensive park system provide recreation, including baseball, softball, basketball, playgrounds, outdoor exercise equipment, walking, running, hiking and nature.

Portland’s rich history gives us pride, a true sense of accomplishment and belonging, and we are pleased and proud to share this history and sense of place with our guests for our 150th Birthday Celebration.

Portland became a Village in 1869, and a City in 1969.  We want you to celebrate with us!

Welcome to Portland!
